De patrouilleschepen van de Holland-klasse zijn flexibel inzetbare schepen, toegerust op de bewaking van kustwateren. Naast antiterrorisme- en antipiraterijoperaties, worden deze zogenoemde ocean-going patrol vessels (OPV) ook ingezet voor drugsbestrijdingsoperaties.
De patrouilleschepen zijn speciaal ontwikkeld voor missies laag in het geweldsspectrum, zoals rechtshandhaving en humanitaire taken. Denk aan kustwachttaken op de Noordzee en in het Caribisch gebied. Er zijn voorzieningen om in totaal 90 bemanningsleden en opstappers langdurig te laten meevaren.
Ook deelname in internationale taakgroepen of optreden tegen piraterij behoren tot de mogelijkheden. Verder kunnen ze hulpgoederen vervoeren en evacués aan boord nemen.
